I've worked within the hearing care industry for over 20 years now. I started my career working for one of the world’s leading manufacturers in hearing aid technology. Having worked for national hearing care providers and running another successful independent clinic specializing in patient care, we quickly realized that there was a distinct lack of care providers within our local area. This is advised for a period of at least 3 times a day over a minimum of 3 days. We highly recommend Earol, which can be purchased from most pharmacies. This olive oil-based spray penetrates the wax much better, particularly in cases of hard, deep-rooted wax. By following these steps, there is a much better chance of a successful and comfortable removal on the first attempt.
We advise against the use of products such as Otex or other products that contain sodium bicarbonate, as this is highly aggressive and not suitable for all kinds of ear wax, especially for those concerned about hearing protection.
Micro suction is the preferred method of ear wax removal used by ENT (ear, nose, and throat) consultants. It is a safe and pain-free method of wax removal that is particularly beneficial for individuals using hearing aids. Micro suction employs a low-pressure suction device to effectively remove ear wax, acting as a mini vacuum. This technique is painless and less invasive than traditional irrigation methods, making it an ideal choice for same day ear wax removal and ensuring optimal hearing protection.
Irrigation has replaced the older, traditional method of ear syringing. While we recommend Micro Suction as our preferred method for ear wax removal, there are times when irrigation may be a more suitable procedure, especially for those who use hearing aids or require hearing protection. The ear clinician will discuss these options with you during your appointment. Please keep in mind that this procedure is not appropriate if you have a perforated ear drum or have been fitted with grommets, as we also offer same day ear wax removal alternatives.
All wax removal procedures, including same day ear wax removal, will be offered starting from £45. This fee covers the cost of wax removal, aftercare advice and guidance, as well as any necessary GP referrals that may be required. Additionally, if you need hearing protection or hearing aids, we can provide information during your appointment. Follow-up appointments may be subject to further charges.
**Please note that visits that do not require wax removal due to other issues such as infections, sinus issues, fluid behind the ear, or no wax present at all will incur a standard ear check charge of £30.**
Home visit appointments may be available in surrounding and non-listed areas; however, these are subject to an additional travel surcharge.
Does Microsuction Hurt?
In nearly all cases, ear wax microsuction does not hurt at all, as the medical suction unit is designed to use a very gentle level of suction. It can be a little noisy, but not much more than the sound of a hand dryer or vacuum cleaner. While some websites suggest that softening with ear drops is not necessary, we believe that using Earol sterile olive oil spray for three days prior to your procedure will enhance comfort and maximize the chances of 100% ear wax removal, especially for individuals with a history of very hard or impacted ear wax. People with a confirmed diagnosis of ear drum perforation should avoid using Earol or other ear drops.
A recent outer ear infection (otitis externa), or the use of ear drops containing hydrogen peroxide, urea peroxide, or sodium bicarbonate can make the skin of the ear canal more sensitive, which may lead to a slightly uncomfortable microsuction procedure in these limited cases. However, most clients find that an ear wax suction procedure is completely painless, and they are delighted to regain their hearing, often considering alternatives like hearing aids if wax build-up is an ongoing issue.
Is Microsuction Completely Safe?
Microsuction is regarded as the safest method of ear wax removal. Most procedures pass without incident, thanks to the efficiency and safety of the method and the skill of our practitioners. Like any medical procedure, despite our best efforts and high level of training, there can be minor occurrences that we would rather avoid, but these are rare.
Can we treat children?
Unfortunately, we can only see patients over the age of 18. For anyone under this age, we advise contacting your local GP/NHS provider for suitable care.
Are same day ear wax removal appointments available?
Yes, same day ear wax removal appointments are available; however, this is subject to availability and prior significant usage of ear drops to soften the wax. Additionally, if you require hearing protection or have questions about hearing aids, we can provide guidance during your visit.
